If Amazon allowed 3 1/2 stars that's what I'd give it. Considering that it was only a two star read for about the first third of the novel, three and a half stars by the end attests to the story's improvement past that point. I felt the first third to be repetitive and the characters rather one dimensional. If you can get past that first third, you'll probably enjoy this story.

The Stone Maiden Susan King 9780451199706 Books Reviews

This book is so much more than an historical romance. For some reason tales of Scottish Highlanders and their clan struggles capture my fancy. Again this is more. Seldom have I been drawn into the characters inner most feelings as this author does. The poetic beauty of the highlands alon with the delightful spin of cultural sensitivity is captivating. In short a read that leaves you smiling with a hunger for more.
I found this story to be highly unique and entertaining. I fell in love with all the clan members immediately, with their special qualities, contributions to the story and their little quirks. The two main characters and their love story took a rather bumpy road, laced with too much pride and stubbornness. Of course this only made the story more interesting, it was almost like two bulls butting heads. In the end however, love won out, hooray!

The descriptions of Scotland's landscape was so beautiful you felt as if you were there, surrounded by all it's majestic power and raw beauty. As well as Ms. King's descriptions of Allaina's stone carvings felt as if you could reach out and touch all the unique carvings, Celtic knots, various symbols and come away with dust on your fingers.....

Then there was all the Bard stories, Celtic songs, Celtic prayers, The Stone Maiden's story and Celtic blessings throughout the book that added a certain mystical charm to the entire story. Enchanting to say the least.

We must not forget the villain who was just a nasty mean little thing that you just wanted to reach in through the pages and yank his butt right out of the book. But then, you wouldn't have your hero, and we needed the hero, we all need our own hero. Our hero came through in the end and it was a spectacular event to envision.

I highly recommend Ms. Kings books to all who love these historical romance novels and without further ado, happy reading!
I liked this book. At first I thought it was going to be the type where the man was to domeniring but thankfully he wasn't. I really liked his character and wish more authors would follow this type of alpha male, one who is confident in himself and string enough to accept a woman who doesn't follow tradition. The reason for the four stars is the heroine. She annoyed me for several reasons. I understand her sadness I really do get it. But she just began to sound majorly depressed after awhile. She wasn't the only one to have lost loved ones yet the others allowed themselves to be happy again. In a way it almost felt like she was determend to remain depressed and after a while it just became annoying and I found myself wishing she would just get on with it already. Another reason is her resistance to the hero. I just don't feel like she had a good enough reason to keep her resistance up especially when he proved himself time and again that he was a good person who worked hard for her clan. I normally enjoy the entire let's resist the other in romance novels but when the resistance out lives the reasons it just getsvannoying. Other than that I truly enjoyed this book and will continue to read this series.
My favorite aspects of this book were Lorne's stories and the charms/prayers. My least favorite was the repetitive typo of Lome for Lorne--or vice versa. I didn't attempt a count of the times one was used over the other--Lome might win that but Lorne is identifiable to me as a name. The denouement regarding Conan does make one wonder why Sebastien didn't think of it months earlier. Maybe King wanted Sebastien to struggle with angst sufficiently? I also think a little more reciprocity was in order--Sebastien seemed to be the giver and Alianna the taker in the relationship between them. Her giving was all directed at "her people". It is a bit difficult to rationalize how the clan was going to survive unless there was SOMEONE(or several someones) besides Sebastien and Alianna to contribute to a new generation? It isn't as though there was any suspense about the ending--it was clear from the moment Alainna visited the King where this was headed but I enjoyed the getting there.
The author obviously did a lot of research for this book! It contained many Celtic traditions, fables, songs, charms, words, stone art symbols, and more. There was also the hint of magic in the story as the Celtic references were used. I liked the story line and all the characters except the main female character. Alainna. She whined and complained for the first 10 chapters about how she did not want to marry a Norman, only a Celtic warrior would do. And then it continued on for most of the rest of the book, but not as often. Leaving some of that out would make the book shorter, and not make the readers tire of it and give up before they got to the actual "meat" of the story. The hero and secondary characters were interesting and likable, as Alainna became later. The story takes place in the Scottish Highlands, but it seemed rather generic in that the speech pattern was modern English with a smattering of Celtic phrases. The story line was somewhat unique in the way it filled in around the basic "warrior meets and marries a fair maiden" theme. That is what kept me reading until the end, although everything ended as I thought it would after
reading Chapter 2.
If allowed 3 1/2 stars that's what I'd give it. Considering that it was only a two star read for about the first third of the novel, three and a half stars by the end attests to the story's improvement past that point. I felt the first third to be repetitive and the characters rather one dimensional. If you can get past that first third, you'll probably enjoy this story.
