As a Baptist who grew up in a small Alabama town not very far from the author himself, this may be the most relatable book I've ever read. I often found myself going back to re-read a chapter aloud to my wife so we could laugh together. This book is written as a collection of short stories - each chapter could almost stand alone - but the author ties them together so well. The only disappointment I experienced was upon reading some details that were lifted directly from The Andy Griffith Show itself. It's the only reason I give this four stars instead of five. I don't know why that affected me so much, but it just left a bad taste in my mouth. I guess after a few chapters I was reading as if these were true stories that really happened in the life of the author, but when I started seeing details that were taken from other sources it made me second guess what I believed about the "facts" in the whole book. For some reason, personal stories are just funnier if they really happened and it took the wind out of my sails to think that I've been reading fiction the whole time, all the while believing it was truth. Still... it's a good, wholesome, fun read that I would recommend.

I had a hard time putting this book down. I laughed at Andy Andrews humor about the town he lived in and all the antics of young boys growing up that always seemed to be discovered and properly addressed for the needed lessons by parents and/or the town's adults. I read much of it over again to my wife's enjoyment.
Today, most of us don't even know who our neighbors are, , , but in this book every resident of Sawyerton Springs knew everybody else and (for the most part) cherished their associations with each other.
A wonderful escape to simpler times. Perfect vacation away from angst-ridden novels and even more distressing current events! The book is a series of essays on Andrews' formative years in a small southern town.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Each chapter contains anecdotes about the author's life in Sawyerton Springs. I want to go there now, it would have to be in the Spring or Fall. It gets very hot there in the Summer per the author. The book is humorous at times, this is a nice read. Enjoy!!
I just discovered this book by Andy Andrews. I'm not sure when it was written, but it's a true gem. Full of laughter and life lessons, these stories will take you back in time to a place I often yearn to return. This was life in the south, and while the book was written about Andy's hometown, I can assure being from the south it was very similar to where I grew up and many of the antics I experienced as a child. Quite frankly, this was the best $2 I have spent in a very long time.
I really enjoyed this book. We are new to the area of South Alabama and so especially found it interesting to have a view of growing up in a small town in the area. LIke his book "the Heat Mender", he includes real people and places in the book, many of them familiar to me. I did laugh out loud at many of the incidents he included.
I feared at first this would not be interesting. After all, it's a story about a place I've never been, about people I don't know and the author wasn't even super famous! However, I was very surprised when I was drawn into this story and wanted to know what each character was up to and what was going to happen next.
Andy Andrews, has a way of bringing every day lives and make their story come to life and he turns tails of their actions and activities into humorous, poignant stories.
This is a great read and I'll bet you are taken by how this book really pulls you into its story.
Equal parts Mayberry, 'A Christmas Story,' and 'The Sandlot'. This book made me laugh more than any book has in a while. I loved the authenticity of the characters of this small town and how charming and dynamic their personalities were in the eyes of the author, beginning with the baseball coach in the opening chapter and continuing through to the girl who loses her pet dog in the last chapter. As her parents explain that the dog has gone to be with God, the girl wonders aloud why God would want a dead dog. Reading through Andy's recollections (I don't know him, but he seems so personable that I think he would insist that I call him by his first name) helps me to realize the extraordinary wonder of our ordinary lives. Andy Andrews has a gift for capturing that essence in a way that compels you to keep reading. And as you read you become an honorary resident of Sawyerton Springs.
