Workings doesn’t just allude to the good though, it mainly talks about the bad side of the two faced corporations that have a bigger part in your life than you may think. This book accurately displays what we as consumers are faced with everyday: a choice. A choice to either support these monopolies, or to support small business and a sustainable future. This book is mainly cut into the past events that have led to today, the development of child advertising and exploitation, and the horrors of the meat packing and pork industries. Overall this book seems to be very factual and it was a quick read. At points it got a bit repetitive, but I guess that is necessary when you are trying to get your point across of not supporting these agglomerations of corporate greed. It is very surprising some of the details that come from this book. I think most parents and really anyone that reads this will be very touched by some of the stories about the youth of today and how they have negatively been affected by McDonald’s and its counterparts. It is conniving and deceitful of how these children are treated by these companies and on top of that we only get one side about America. Imagine the countless other third world countries that have wages close to nothing that have kids working for a better part of the day to help support their families. This book is just another account of some of the cruelties that need to be changed in the future. We can’t keep supporting the businesses that exploit the future leaders of our world.

might be healthier than going to fast food joints! Absolutely FANtastic book. This should be required reading for every school child in America. It's a quick and easy read. In addition to the fascinating depiction of despicable food corporations and their money-hungry power, there are real stories about young people who have tried to make changes in their school or work place. Schlosser details the beyond-wretched conditions in slaughterhouses. Those chapters are VERY difficult to read. What would ever cause people to give up their addictions to fast food? Reading this book might make us all - at least consider toning down the urge to eat a McRib or McShake. Significant book for sure...
Required reading for school, but my daughter ended up sharing it with the family. She actually read the entire book. We (grown ups) watched the film- and I advise anyone to pre-view the film (posted on the book), it is NOT family viewing. Right old shock, that was... We were definitely not expecting that the film is well different than this book.
However, this book IS for young readers, and it is informative and easy to read. My daughter learned a lot about processed food, and it was nice that she no longer needs to wonder why we do not let her eat the rubbish and highly processed "food" here. Brought her around to the side of eating well and why it matters.
"Chew on This" is essentially "Fast Food Nation" rewritten for young adults. Co-authored by Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson, this book takes a no-holds-barred look at the fast food industry and how it has affected our farms, our waistlines, and our lives. It includes pictures and stories that are sure to interest younger readers and make them question their eating habits.

The authors begin with a brief history of the hamburger before moving on to how McDonald's grew from one restaurant into a worldwide franchise. And from there, how the fast food industry's demand for beef and chicken has completely changed the farming industry. Much of the focus is on McDonald's, which might seem extreme at some times, yet that franchise really was the impetus for many of the ways that fast food restaurants function today. The authors examine how processed foods are created, how too much fast food can negatively impact our bodies, how fast food workers are treated, and how our towns and cities have changed, all in the name of fast food. Some of the information is truly shocking, while other information is downright disheartening.

"Chew on This Everything You Don't Want to Know About Fast Food" is an eye-opening read that should be required reading for its target audience. As someone who works in the education field, I see just how unhealthy school lunches can be and the extent of the unhealthy eating habits many students have. I hope that those who read this book will think twice before they visit another fast food restaurant.
You will be much more aware of the influence-as well as the nasty stuff- the fast-food chains pass off as edible.
Considering the poor nutrition of this (TRULY) junk food passed off to the public, it's no wonder diabetes and obesity are such big issues.
We treat food like it doesn't impact our health in the U.S.A. We have passed on this myth to other countries, too.
