Forty Acres (Audible Audio Edition) Dwayne Alexander Smith Andre Blake Whole Story Audiobooks Books

This book was chosen by my book club members. It was not orignally on my radar. The beginning of the book did not capture my attention. However, shortly after the trial and the relationships started to develop the book got interesting. I loved the premise and the concepts of the reversal of racial dominance. The group discussion was consistent regarding the internal conflict to persecute one race as retaliation for 500 plus years of crimes against another culture/race. The cruel punishment seemed justified in retrospect. However, many of us have friends and/or relatives of mixed race heritage that we had to discuss further the implications of what revenge really meant in the 21st century. The initial response was "yes" this plot could work in the real world. There are plenty of undercover and secret societies the general public knows nothing about that operate against the greater good of humanity. The conclusion was weak as if the author ran out of steam or ideas. The book club resonated with a section of the book that would have been an awesome cliffhanger and suspenseful way to either create another volume or just leave the reading hanging with a great twist and surprise. So as not to give away a good read I encourage others to engage 40 Acres for themselves. This is the authors first book. He is to be commended for such a lovely and complex subject for thoughtful readers with a fuller grasp of pre-history, colonialism, and our current state of "black noise" infiltrating the air. Well done!

Forty Acres (Audible Audio Edition) Dwayne Alexander Smith Andre Blake Whole Story Audiobooks Books Reviews

This is the kind of ultra-direct story telling that I enjoy. The author does not wax on, then stand back to admire his prose. Instead he's fixated on keeping a clear tightly constructed tale moving with a style remininicent of a good screenplay. And that's exactly how this plays out; a great thriller playing in your mind as you read, with each scene falling expertly into place. In spite of the somewhat risky material, I found the themes and plot plausible enough to keep me from shaking my head. This is an unusual book in many respects; a fast read that never bogs down with heavy exposition yet also feels fleshed out and fully rendered. Forty Acres a bloody good book!
Mr. Smith, what an awesome story. I was hooked from the very first page. My book club chose your novel as the book of the month. we will be discussing it at our next meeting on Saturday (1/21) and I know we are going to be fired up. Martin was fearless. I love the modern day slavery. They were all a bunch of mad men. This is a classic example of how out of control things can be when you allow another to do it for you. I would recommend this book to others. The
way the author left it hanging makes me feel there is more left to be said. The knock on the door at the end really messed me up. Bravo Mr. Smith,
clap for yourself.
I have not read a thriller since April 2009, so needless to say. I was well overdue. I cannot think of a better novel to quench my thriller thirst than Forty Acres. Smith and his characters take Agrarian Reform into their own hands by avenging the wrongs done unto our ancestors by kidnapping Anglo descendants of weathly Plantation owners and enslaving them.

I admire and commend Smith's "bravery" in writing this book. When my book club selected this novel for our April meeting, I was immediately drawn to the title and what I assumed was a "literal" cover.

The pure literary craftsmanship can be found in the characterization of slavery role reversal. Conceptually, I have attempted to read only one other book with this premise, Blonde Roots" by Bernardine Evaristo, however it did not meet my expectations

Although Forty Acres is a work of fiction, the reader is drawn into the real life plights of abduction and human trafficking as well as civil injustice. There are several other social/economic issues divulged, such as wealth acquisition with regards to philanthropy, male chauvinism, gender placement and racism.

This novel really makes you think twice.

Throughly enjoyed Smith's work and am looking forward to our book club discussion where our hostess has selected the Verandah of a local Country Club as our venue....how appropriate is that?
The premise of the book presents the African-American reader with an intriguing question? If you could avenge the enslavement of your ancestors by holding whites in bondage, would you? Could you? I think the book description gives away too much of the content, so I'm glad to have avoided reading it or I may have never decided to read this book. If at all possible I recommend potential readers do the same, it will make for a much more enjoyable experience. Based on the book blurb, the first thought that came to my mind, was how implausible can Forty Acres be?

The author does a good job of setting up the story and because I initially was unaware of the details about Forty Acres, I was experiencing the slow realization of what the protagonist, attorney Martin Grey was eventually coming to grips with. Knowing in advance I believe would have taken away some of the thrill, at least for this reader. So Martin is placed in a most difficult situation that requires some highly improbable decisions and nearly impossible outcomes. For three quarters of the book the suspense is taut and the story well paced. However the last quarter of the book, readers are ushered into the unlikely zone. Because the setup was so good and the prose lively, you keep reading and live within that zone to the novel's end.

This novel raises a few thought provoking questions and should make readers probe their own conscience as to how they might handle the central question of revenge and in what form. This book would be great for book club discussions because there is a lot of ground to cover and much for readers to ponder and debate. An intriguing and stimulating read that requires a bit of reality suspension. After all it is a work of fiction.
