Doubleback The Georgia Davis Series Libby Fischer Hellmann Books

Doubleback by Libby Fischer Hellman is the sequel to Easy Innocence, and reunites PI Georgia Davis with video producer Ellie Foreman, the heroine of Hellman’s other series. Georgia and Ellie aren’t much alike – one is a single, tough, former cop turned private investigator and the other is a divorced mom who is a commercial television producer. They aren’t even really close friends when the story starts, but they are strong, intelligent and curious and want to get to the bottom of things.

The book opens with a scene in a stalled elevator. Although interesting and tense, it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with either Georgia or Ellie. But just wait. Eight-year-old Molly Messenger is kidnapped, her mother asks Ellie for help, Ellie asks Georgia to look into it, and the story is off and running. Molly is returned unharmed, but her mother dies in an accident a few days later. Accident? From Chicago to Northern Wisconsin to an Arizona border town, Georgia and Ellie are confronted with suspicious deaths, fraudulent transactions, a paramilitary training camp, and drug and people smuggling.

Although Georgia is a fearless and dedicated investigator, she is also inexperienced and reckless enough to get in serious danger. Attempts are made on her life and she is physically battered and bruised, and may actually die trying to find out who is responsible and just how many people are involved.

This is another excellent novel by Libby Fischer Hellman. The action is believable and non-stop. The suspense is almost unbearable at times and the mystery is not easy to solve. As usual, she blends current events with an amazing knowledge of Chicago and its inner workings. There are a lot of details and the story is complicated, but Hellman makes it easy to follow and hard to put down. She shifts focus seamlessly from Georgia to Ellie and everyone in between and from location to location.

I highly recommend Doubleback. I first read it, and then received an audiobook in exchange for an honest review. It was just as thrilling and exciting the second time around. The narrator, Eva Kaminsky, fit the story perfectly and quickly became transparent because I was so focused on the action of the story. I recommend anything and everything by Libby Fischer Hellman, and hope Georgia and Ellie get together again soon.

Doubleback The Georgia Davis Series Libby Fischer Hellmann Books Reviews

This is another spell-binding story that keeps one anxious to read on. The author definitely knows how to keep you turning the pages.
Herrmann brings the action to you on every page. Her knowledge of the State of Illinois really adds to the action. Great sense of legal, law, and their inner workings help with her own PI's course of action and the media is not looking forward to working with her. She is diligent, pushy, dedicated to be there when needed. Great reading, thanks.
This book was nowhere near as good as Easy Innocence. Too much Ellie and her storyline and not enough Georgia.
Complicated clues, cover ups, kidnapping ,and murder, what more could a reader ask for? Twisted people do horrible things for money, but thank heavens the two pi women from Chicago are on the good side! Action, adventure, and great characters make this a great read. Way to go Libby!
I didn't want to stop reading this book. Great characters and a fast paced story that kept me reading until the end. It was a little disconcerting when the point of view changed at the start of a new chapter, and there were a few spelling and grammar errors, but not enough to fully distract me from the story. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.
I've been reading Libby Fischer Hellmann's mysteries since her first, "An Eye For Murder" (2002). It's been fascinating to watch her characters -- and her voice as an author -- evolve over that period. All of her books are good, but since her character P.I. Georgia Davis arrived on the scene Ms. Fischer Hellmann's novels have moved to the upper echelon of crime fiction.

"DoubleBack" places Davis and past-protagonist Ellie Foreman in the middle of circumstances that sound like they could happen tomorrow -- if you're willing to believe that banks, mercenaries, drug cartels and border-town fanatics could all come together in one major blowout. (And if you aren't willing to believe that, what are your doing reading crime fiction?)

The plot is fast-paced, rich with detail and sense of place ... and a whole lot of fun. I found myself 100 pages into "DoubleBack" when Michael Connelly's "Nine Dragons" arrived (via Whispernet), and even though I read a couple of chapters of the new Connelly book, "DoubleBack" drew me back. It's that good.

I can't wait to see what Ms. Fischer Hellman comes up with next. Whether it involves these characters or not, I am sure it will be great.
I wouldn't say this was the best story ever but it was a good one for the most part. I couldn't give it the 5 star rating I would have liked for a couple of reason.

One, it was not smoothly transitioned. There as two main characters that this story waffles between and there were times I wasn't sure which one was center stage in the story. It would abruptly end one scene, and it could have been either character who picked up in the next start. Half the time I was backing up trying to figure out who it was.

The second issue was the jumping around and the seemingly two or three different story lines crossing back and forth. I am still not sure of what exactly was happening in this murder/mystery/drama/kidnapping event.

It was a lot of work just trying to keep it all straight and I am not sure if I would read it again. But, still it really wasn't exactly bad it was more confusing. So, my advise if you are going to read it pay careful attention to all the details maybe that will make it easier to follow.
